ADOHTA welcomes the SA Governments decision to remove age restrictions from Dental Therapist practice.
The Australian Dental and Oral Health Therapists Association Inc. (ADOHTA) applauds the South Australian Governments decision to amend the legislation and remove the age limit restrictions on Dental Therapist practice...
Dental Therapists provide high quality care, including check-ups, fillings and preventive care, complying with standards that dentists also have to meet. Many Dental Therapists are dually qualified as Dental Hygienists. This qualification in dental and oral health has been recognised for over 40 years in Australia, advised Ms Barker. Furthermore, Dental Therapists have also been providing care for adults in Western Australia, New Zealand, the UK and Canada for over 20 years, she said.
Over 40% of Australian adults do not access regular dental care, predominantly due to cost. Dental Therapists have skills that match the high levels of unmet need in our community. Dental therapists have been examining, diagnosing, planning and providing dental treatment within their scope of practice for children, adolescents and young adults since the late 1960s. said Ms Barker. Speaking Out in Support of Denticare
The National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission Interim Report on "A Healthier Future for All Australians" was released yesterday. Of special interest is the recommendation for the creation of a Denticare scheme similar to Medicare and the recommendation for a one-year internship scheme prior to full registration for dentists, dental therapists and dental hygienists.
The President of the Dental and Oral Health Therapist Association of Australia (ADOHTA), Ms Julie Barker, says "it is good that access to dental care for low income people is on the political agenda."Read more....
